Fans help your AC feel more effective. Here's how to get a ceiling fan installation right.
Size the fan to the room
Larger rooms need larger blade spans. Keep blades at a safe height and a comfortable distance from walls.
Use a fan-rated box
Fans are heavier than most light fixtures and they move. A standard light box may not be rated for that. This is the most common problem we fix on DIY installs.
Outdoor fans
Lanai and patio fans should be damp- or wet-rated depending on exposure.
Controls
Wall controls, remotes and smart fan switches make fans easier to use. Many smart controls need a neutral wire in the switch box.
Direction
In Florida, most people keep fans running counterclockwise for a cooling breeze.
Quick answers
Can I put a fan where there's no fixture?
Yes, an electrician can add wiring and a switch.
Why does my fan wobble?
Loose mounting, an unsuitable box or unbalanced blades are typical causes.
